 A tropical climate

Liberia San José Puntarenas

Your visit to Costa Rica will take you to a warm, humid tropical climate, where temperatures remain fairly stable year round. For most of the country, the average annual temperature falls between 71°F (21.7°C) and 85°F (28°C), with the coolest months being from November through January and the warmest, from March through May.

This said, Costa Rica's location, the nation's location and topography also create differences in the timing and intensity of Costa Rica's two seasons, "Summer" and "Winter." In general, the summertime, or dry season, runs from December to April, while winter, Costa Rica's rainy or so-called green season, extends from May to November.

But on the Caribbean side of the country, the wet season will start as early as mid-April and run through December or January. Between September and February, major storms sometimes frequent the region causing continuous downpours that last several days. Mostly though, a typical rainy season day is much like that on of the Pacific side of Costa Rica. It's sunny and pleasant in the morning, with clouds and a couple of hours of rain coming in the afternoon.

The Pacific region's rainy season begins in May and goes through November, with the wettest months being September and October. The Northern Pacific zone, meanwhile, experiences an intense dry season; no rain may fall for months and hot dry winds persistently blow through the region.

The Southern Pacific zone has a shorter dry season and longer, heavier afternoon rains during the wet season. San José and the whole Central Valley, has the most temperate climate. It's dry season is mild and pleasant, temperatures remain moderate throughout most of the year and rainfall is lower than average for Costa Rica as a whole.
